Community-Based Work Training:
The Work Experience Program assists the student in developing work skills and abilities necessary to meet the needs of the workplace. This placement will be with a cooperating business in the Talladega area (fast food, discount stores, hospital, vetrenarian clinics, offices, etc.). Through this work experience, the student will work toward exhibiting appropriate work behaviors in the work place. The progress is monitored by site-visits by work experience teacher and job coach, as well as the student's employer.
Through participation in the school based work program, the student learns basic work skills, attitudes, and ethics by working alongside the teacher/staff memberperforming various duties on-campus. The school-based workers are responsible for a wide variety of campus work some of which include the recycling program on campus (paper and aluminum cans) and the frame shop. Throughout this course emphasis is placed on developing a good work attitude and appropriate work behaviors.

For each job title, the students research the training requirements, salary, job description and working environment. Also, the students' interests are assessed, discussed individually, and matched with a realistic career. Job applications are briefly discussed as well as interview skills. Other topics covered are work literacy, work ethic, attitude in the work plae, reasons and benefits of working, and employer expectations.
Summer Work Program:
The ASD Summer Work Program was very successful this year. We had a total of 36 summer jobs. Some of the juniors and seniors had an opportunity to work in their field of interest in their home town. Several students work on closed weekends and holidays. One of the recent graduates accepted a full-time position with benefits after he completed his summer work period. All of the students did a wonderful job!
