Dear Parents and Students:
It’s time again to get ready for school at the Alabama School for the Deaf (ASD). We are so proud of each student here at ASD. That, of course means you are the best and most dedicated of parents anywhere. Last school year was great with many student accomplishments. I am confident that the 2013 – 2014 school year will see students achieving even more.
We have large number of new students joining us at ASD this year. These students and their parents will be facing a new experience. They may have questions and fears. Thank you for your efforts to welcome and calm the nerves of our new ASD “family members”.
As always, we’ll work on improving reading, writing, science, math, and other academic skills.
Applying those academic concepts in areas like Career/Tech, athletics, clubs and organizations, leadership, independent living, self-advocacy, responsibility, etc. will be emphasized again this year as well. As always, your input is requested as we depend on your guidance for ASD and for your child’s Individual Education Plan (IEP).
While we made significant efforts toward building a strong Parent/Teacher Organization (PTO) in 2012-2013, we will redouble those efforts for the coming year. While much less a problem at ASD than in other schools, we will be continuing our efforts to get rid of intimation and bullying. This is part of a national initiative to eliminate bullying and the effects thereof on students and schools throughout the nation. ASD is proud to take part in this essential program.
Please visit our ASD website at www.asdsilentwarriors.com whenever you can. It will keep you up to date on news and events at ASD through the year. We will broadcast football games, volleyball games, basketball games, dramatic performances, and other events in real time on the ASD Website as well. The ASD Student Handbook has been revised and will be given out to parents and students at registration Sunday, August 11, 2013 as well.
Please find enclosed your 2013-2014 ASD Student Registration Packet. All forms must be updated and completed as shown in the Registration Packet Instructions. Please bring your completed packet and any additional required documents with you to registration.
ASD Silent Warrior Varsity Football Camp, by invitation only, will take place the week before the rest of the students return. Therefore, registration day for football players will be Sunday, August 4, 2013 from noon – 3:00 p.m. Registration for all students not invited to Football Camp will be August 11, 2013 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Enjoy your summer and we look forward to seeing you soon!
